Valigonda railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the railway accident in Valigonda on October 29, 2005, the Delta Express derailed near Valigonda in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana ) because a bridge had been washed away. 114 people died.

Starting position

The Delta Express , a train of the South Central Railway , which ran from Repalle to Hyderabad , was very busy that day because of the holiday for the festival of lights Diwali with about 1000 travelers . It consisted of the locomotive and 14, 15 or 17 cars .

The route that the train traveled in the dark at around 4:15 a.m. crossed the drain of a retention basin on a bridge . Heavy monsoon rain had fallen for more than a week and had been particularly intense for three days.

the accident

A crack had appeared in the dam that blocked the water it contained, which enlarged and made the dam give way. The escaping water also tore the railway bridge away before the train had crossed it. The train crashed into the fault, causing the locomotive and seven cars to crash. Three of the cars fell straight into the water and were further flushed. Most of the people died here.

consequences

114 people died and another 200 were injured. The rescue work was hindered because the streets were also softened by the continuous rain. The Indian Navy dispatched rescue divers to the scene of the accident to help with the rescue and recovery work. Some people are said to have been rescued who had stayed in air chambers under water.

The accident resulted in a parliamentary investigation by the Indian federal parliament. Adjacent farmers were also badly damaged by accident and rescue work.
