The unfinished bridge after its collapse in 1966

The Tössbrücke , also known as the Schlosstalbrücke , is a 162 meter long motorway bridge in the Winterthur district of Wülflingen . In October 1966, the bridge collapsed while it was being built and had to be rebuilt.

location

The bridge is located between the motorway junction Winterthur-Töss and Wülflingen Winterthur-of Highway 1 and are crossing at an oblique angle to the river Töss , which gives the bridge the name, and also underlying Schlosstalstrasse.

history

Bridge collapse

On Thursday morning, October 27, 1966, at 7 a.m., the falsework together with the 23-meter-wide bridge still under construction collapsed. The break-in occurred shortly before the concreting work was completed on the morning of a rainy night.

At the time of the collapse, there were 38 employees on the construction site. When the structure collapsed, construction workers were still partially trapped in the concrete boxes, although they did not collapse, which probably contributed significantly to the fact that the bridge collapse did not claim any fatalities. A total of 17 injured people, including 6 construction workers with broken bones and bruises, had to be hospitalized after the accident. The clearing of the 7,000 tons of rubble attracted thousands of onlookers in the days that followed, some of whom came from abroad. The collapse caused an estimated damage amount of around 3 million francs, which was borne by an insurance company. The cause of the collapse was later determined to be too high a load on the steel girders.

As part of the legal review, five years after the accident, the responsible civil engineer was sentenced to a fine of eight hundred francs and a partial assumption of the procedural costs in the amount of 11,500 francs plus the costs of the lower courts for negligent endangerment by violating the building customer rules . A second engineer charged was acquitted by the district court.

Reconstruction and operation

The successful reconstruction of the bridge was announced at the beginning of April 1968, in good time before the scheduled opening of the motorway section. On September 19, 1968, the bridge was opened together with the new motorway section from Winterthur-Töss to Ohringen.

For the first time after opening, the bridge was subjected to a partial overhaul in 1995 and 1996. Due to the poor structural condition, the repair of the bridge was brought forward to that of the rest of the motorway section and was carried out from March 2014 to July 2015 for 10 million francs.
