The Schoharie Creek is a right tributary of the Mohawk River in the US state of New York .
River course
Schoharie Creek has its source on Indian Head Mountain in the Catskill Mountains . It flows mainly in a northerly direction. The Schoharie Reservoir is located on the upper reaches . The lower basin of the Blenheim-Gilboa pumped storage power plant is located 5 km downstream . It is operated by the New York Power Authority and has four units with a total output of 1000 MW. It flows further north past Blenheim , Middleburgh and Esperance and finally flows into the Mohawk River at Port Hunter . The Schoharie Creek has a length of 150 km.
history
Two famous bridges over Schoharie Creek have collapsed in the past. In 1987, two support lengths of the New York State Thruway broke . On August 28, 2011, the covered bridge, Old Blenheim Bridge, was destroyed by the floods caused by Hurricane Irene .
The Erie Canal used to cross Schoharie Creek by means of an aqueduct . Today the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is located there .
