The New York Power Authority , abbreviated NYPA , official name Power Authority of the State of New York , is the largest state, electrical energy producer and electricity network operator in the USA . The company is owned by the State of New York with headquarters in White Plains . The company was founded after a legal act in 1931 by Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt with the aim of ensuring the public energy supply from hydropower in the state of New York. At that time there was a fear that in the years following the war there would be a one-sided exploitation of hydropower by “hydropower barons” with damage to the population.

NYPA operates 17 power plants with a total capacity of 4.2 GW , including run-of- river power plants on the Niagara River and the Saint Lawrence River , several caloric power plants in New York City , the Blenheim-Gilboa pumped storage power plant in the Catskill Mountains and a pumped storage power plant on the Niagara River , as well as the Châteauguay direct current back-up to the Hydro-Québec network in Canada. The company also operates the high-voltage network in the state of New York with a line length of around 2,000 km.
