Starting position

Train No. 442 was traveling from Geliping to Chengdu . The last time he stopped at the Niri train station was 1:41 a.m. Niri is located on the Chengdu-Kunming Railway in Ganluo County in the Chinese province of Sichuan . Here the route led in the mountains over the Liziyida , a tributary to the Dadu He . Before the railway line the steel - bridge on concrete - pillars reached, they went through a mountain projection in Nainaibao- tunnel , which had a gradient of 14 ‰.

the accident

During the night a slipped mudslide through the gorge of Liziyida. This also tore away the 17 meter high, 110 meter long railway bridge over the Liziyida . One minute after the train had left Niri station, the telephone connection to the next station, Wusi, was interrupted when the dispatcher from Niri wanted to inform his colleague there of the train's departure: the mudslide had also interrupted the telephone line .

At 1:45 a.m., the train entered the Nainaibao tunnel at 40 km / h. This had a slight curvature. After driving through the bend, the engine driver noticed in the light of the headlights that a building had collapsed at the tunnel exit and the reflection of the headlights on the rails in front of him abruptly broke off. He immediately initiated an emergency brake , but the train could no longer stop in front of the section of the route over which the bridge had previously led. At 1:47 a.m. the train drove into the gap. The locomotive , the baggage car and a passenger car crashed. The next car derailed in the tunnel and then overturned outside.

consequences

More than 200 passengers and railway employees (according to another source: 360) died or were permanently missing, their bodies washed away by the river. In addition, 146 people were injured.

It took until July 24th to resume rail traffic over a temporary bridge. The section was then replaced by a bypass tunnel, which went into operation in May 1984. The Nainaibao Tunnel and the makeshift bridge were shut down.
