Bridge collapse at Frohnleiten

On February 21, 2015 the Mur Bridge Frohnleiten collapsed on the Brucker Schnellstraße in the direction of Graz , during renovation work. The ÖBB tracks running underneath were destroyed. The southern line between Bruck / Mur and Graz was interrupted.

In spring 2014, the new construction of the Mur Bridge Frohnleiten began in the direction of Graz. The two-lane bridge built in the 1950s no longer complied with safety regulations. The old bridge was dismantled and a new bridge pillar was built in the Mur. A popular pedestrian crossing over the Mur has been renewed. Finally, the bridge section between the old bridge pier on land and the approach bridge was built. This collapsed on February 21, 2015.

On the evening of February 21, 2015, the falsework that supported the 800-ton bridge gave way. The bridge crashed onto the tracks of the main line Bruck an der Mur – Graz. Nobody was injured, a full ÖBB train passing under the bridge shortly before was spared. In addition to the tracks and the overhead lines, a construction crane was also hit. 20 residents had to be temporarily evacuated. For long-distance and local transport, including trains of the S-Bahn Styria , one was Schienenersatzverkehr furnished.

The collapse caused damage of around 5 million euros. The construction of the bridge was delayed by three months. According to an expert opinion, the falsework of the bridge gave in to the vibrations of the trains passing underneath and finally collapsed.
