from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beeskow Art Archive is a documentation center for the fine arts in the GDR, located in Beeskow, Brandenburg . The art archive stores, among other things, paintings , prints , drawings and sculptures . The portfolio contains around 23,000 objects (as of 2017).

prehistory

In 1990, on behalf of the last East German Ministry of Culture, the works of art were collected in all districts of the GDR , the purchases of which were financed by the GDR Cultural Fund and which were exhibited in public buildings. These were, for example, rest homes, training centers, business offices, guest houses and dining rooms. The Beeskow Castle was to be converted into an East Brandenburg cultural and educational center following a district council resolution in 1991 and the establishment of a contemporary art collection for the Berlin / Brandenburg area began. Herbert Schirmer (until 1999), the last minister of culture in the GDR, became head of the facility . In the following years several thousand objects were taken over and inventoried. The states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Berlin opted for a state association whose art collection will come to Beeskow. In 1995, the administration of the Oder-Spree district converted a storage facility near the castle into a secure and air-conditioned image depot for the 20,000 works of art at that time . The handling of art is regulated by agreements that the participating federal states, the district administration and the interest group “new visual arts” concluded in Berlin. A research assistant, a depot manager and a librarian were provided by the "GDR Art Collection and Documentation Center" in October 1995.

Administrative agreement "Art Archive"

In 2001 the “Art Archive” administrative agreement was signed between the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Brandenburg and Berlin . In this, the state of Brandenburg committed itself to creating the organizational prerequisites so that the archive inventory can be used. Use is understood to mean the scientific development, information and publication as well as the collection, archiving and evaluation of secondary materials on the subject of "Art in the GDR". There are also cultural and scientific events. The board of trustees agreed on the name "Beeskow Art Archive" . It is expressly emphasized that the purpose of the archive is not to create a museum collection on art in the GDR. In 2017 the states of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania announced their financial withdrawal from the project. The Oder-Spree district and the state of Brandenburg want to continue to support the collection.
