Culture Fund of the GDR

The Kulturfonds der DDR was a funding program for material aid for artists and cultural workers . At the same time it was an office (seat: Berlin) of the GDR Ministry of Culture . The last director was Wolfgang Patig.

The fund was founded on September 2, 1949 by the federal executive committee of the FDGB , the federal management of the cultural association and the administration for popular education , the founders each contributed 150,000 marks . In the following period, the fund was fed in particular by a culture tax levied on the entrance fee at every cultural event , which was later also levied on the sale of recorded sound carriers. The culture tax was 0.05 M, for admission / sales prices of more than 0.50 M it was 0.10 M. The tax was also due for cinema tickets.

After the end of the GDR, the culture fund formed the basis of the foundation culture fund of the new federal states .
