Cultural Fund Foundation of the New Federal States

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Foundation for Cultural Fund of the New Federal States was established after German reunification in 1990 as the successor to the former GDR Cultural Fund and was dissolved in March 2006.

It was a public law foundation supported by the countries of the accession area with the purpose of materially safeguarding cultural life in the acceding countries (Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia) and Berlin, at least for a transitional period. According to a resolution by the Lothar de Maizière government, parts of the PDS's party assets were incorporated into the foundation's assets .

The foundation's support work consisted in granting working grants in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, photography, film / video, literature and music. In addition, project grants and residence grants for the artist houses Lukas in Ahrenshoop and Schloss Wiepersdorf were awarded .

In 1998, the Free State of Saxony unilaterally terminated the state treaty that was concluded when the Kulturfonds Foundation was established, taking with it the share of the foundation's assets allocated to all participating states in this contract. At the end of 2004 this example was followed by the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. As a result of the associated loss of capital, the Kulturfonds foundation had to go into liquidation.

In April 2003, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (known as Minister of State for Culture) Christina Weiss proposed to merge three cultural foundations ( Federal Cultural Foundation , State Cultural Foundation , Foundation Cultural Fund) and to set up a 'German Cultural Foundation'. The then Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber prevented the cultural foundation.
