The Emsmoon is a coaster that made headlines after it collided with the Friesenbrücke in Weener in December 2015 and destroyed it in the process.
history
The ship is one of a series of eleven units from the Dutch shipbuilding company Ferus Smit Scheepswerf . It was laid down in 1998, but was not completed until the end of 2000 and delivered as Morgenstond III to the Scheepvaartonderneming Morgenstond III in Siddeburen. In 2005, the Papenburg shipping company Grona Shipping acquired the ship and continued to operate it as Emsmoon .
On the evening of December 3, 2015, the Emsmoon collided with the closed hinged part of the Friesenbrücke and destroyed it. The bridge was so badly damaged in the collision that it has to be completely rebuilt. The freighter suffered only minor damage. However, it had become so wedged on the bridge that it had to be freed with the help of the tug Gerd Bliede . The tug first brought the Emsmoon back to the port of Papenburg.
technology
The ship is designed as a dry freighter with aft superstructures and two holds. The cargo space is 8620 m 3 for grain and 3907 m 3 of bale space, the load capacity is around 6300 tons. The tank roof of the hold is reinforced for the transport of heavy loads as well as provided with facilities for the transport of containers . The cargo space is locked securely with stackable hatch covers.
The ship's drive system consists of an eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Wärtsilä (type: 8R32E). The motor has an output of up to 3280 kilowatts and drives a controllable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The berthing and casting off maneuvers can be supported by a bow thruster . A shaft generator and two Detroit diesel engines of type 645 DSBIMG are available for power generation. A Sisu diesel generator of the type 620 DSG was installed as a harbor and emergency generator.
