The Trojská lávka ( Czech for Trojaer pedestrian bridge ) was a 256-meter long and 3.8 meter wide pedestrian bridge over the Vltava River in Prague , which the Emperor island with the district Troy joined. It opened on July 7, 1984 and collapsed around 1:30 p.m. on December 2, 2017, injuring four people, two of them seriously.

The bridge was used by visitors to the Prague Zoo and Troja Castle , among others . As a replacement, a ferry connection was set up on December 23, 2017. The construction of a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists began in November 2019 and should be ready in October 2020.

construction

The bridge construction was unusual for the time. A similar bridge was built in Brno in 1979 and the design was later transferred to the bridge in Prague. 156 steel cables were stretched over concrete pillars north and south of the Vltava and attached to blocks on both banks. The result was a 50 meter long bridge segment on the Imperial Island, one 85 meters long on the Troy side and a 90 meter section over the river. Slabs were threaded onto the ropes and covered with polymer concrete . The incline of the path was up to 10 degrees.

The pillars and anchoring blocks were built by the “Speciálni zakládání staveb” branch of the then state-owned company Vodní stavby Praha , the actual construction was carried out by the construction company Dopravní stavby Olomouc .

history

At first there was a ferry connection between Troy and the Imperial Island. In 1976 a pontoon bridge was opened, which was destroyed by a flood in the summer of 1981. The tension cable bridge, which opened in 1984, was built according to plans by the well-known bridge architect Jiří Stráský, now a professor of civil engineering in the Department of Concrete and Stone Structures at the Brno University of Technology . The new bridge was also inundated by floods. It was renovated in 1998–1999.

According to information from the Czech Pirate Party , the responsible Prague building authorities were aware of the poor condition of the bridge as early as 2009. In 2011, the authorities pointed out the poor condition and estimated the remaining useful life of the structure at 5–7 years. In 2014, corrosion of the supporting steel cables was found. The bridge was last checked three weeks before the collapse, but no warning was issued. The bridge had a system that monitored its condition and sent a signal every two minutes. The last signal was received on December 2, 2017 at 1:16 p.m.

Two weeks after the collapse, the fire brigade pulled the bridge segment that had fallen into the Vltava with special equipment. The Strabag company received the order to remove the rubble .

Consequences of the collapse

The head of the responsible building authority was relieved of his office. A review of all other bridges in Prague was ordered. Several of them were also in poor condition at the time of the collapse. A pedestrian bridge over the Berounka , which connects the Prague district of Lipence with the city of Černošice , was temporarily closed and reinforced with struts. As a precautionary measure , a pedestrian bridge over the Sázava between Hvězdonice and Poddubí , about 30 kilometers southeast of Prague, and a bridge over the March in Kroměříž, 240 kilometers away, similar to the Trojská lávka, were closed .

Irrespective of any later compensation, the Prague city council decided to pay the four injured immediately an amount of 50,000 kroner each (around 2,000 euros).
