The Ellero is a 35 km (according to other sources 58 km) long river in the province of Cuneo in lower Piedmont . It is a tributary of the Tanaro in the Po river system . The Ellero rises in the Ligurian Alps at about 2000 m above sea level east of the Punta Marguareis . Partly a torrent, it has a steep gradient in the upper reaches. Here is the nature reserve Parco naturale del Marguareis .

On the further course of the Valle Ellero are the places Roccaforte Mondovì and the town of Mondovì on a wide plateau . After another 10 km the Ellero flows into the Tanaro at Magliano Alpi , only a few kilometers above the mouth of its western parallel river Pesio .
