Golden crescent

Main growing area of opium

The Golden Crescent is next to the Golden Triangle , the main growing area of opium in Asia . It extends over Iran , Afghanistan and Pakistan , whereby Iran is only a consumption and transit country for the illegally obtained raw opium and the heroin made from it . Opium cultivation has long been common in these countries, and this area has played a role as a supplier of raw materials for the international drug trade since the 1970s. While production in the Golden Triangle is falling, it has increased dramatically in the Golden Crescent : Afghanistan replaced Myanmar as the largest opium producer in 1991 (1782 tons) and now supplies around 90% of world production.
