The Parco naturale del Marguareis is a nature reserve in the south of Piedmont in the north-western Italian province of Cuneo . Until 2011 it was called Parco naturale della Alta Valle Pesio e Tanaro .
location
The nature park extends over an area of 6,638 hectares in the upper reaches of the Tanaro - the largest river in the Ligurian Alps - and its tributary Pesio , both of which belong to the river system of the Po . The nature park was founded in 1978. Its area is also called Piccole Dolomiti in Italian .
The park encompasses the two opposite mountain slopes of Punta Marguareis (2,651 m), and there are a number of grottos on its site , with a currently explored total length of over 150 kilometers and maximum lows of 1000 meters. The flora and fauna are mostly alpine . It is worth mentioning the relatively young presence of the wolf in the park.
Hiking trails
The Via Alpina and the Grande Traversata delle Alpi run through the Parco naturale del Marguareis . The most famous circular hiking trail is the Giro del Marguareis.
