The Polcevera (in Ligurian : Ponçéivia ) is a torrent river in the northern Italian metropolitan city of Genoa . It flows through the valley of the same name and is the second longest river in the port city of Genoa after the Bisagno . In contrast to the latter, however, it has a larger catchment area .
The source river of the Polcevera is the Torrente Verde , which rises on Monte Leco at an altitude of 1072 meters. After a distance of 8 kilometers between the municipalities of Ceranesi and Campomorone , the Riccò stream flows into the Verde at the level of the Genoese district of Pontedecimo and forms with it the Polcevera. The length of the Polcevera from its origin at Pontedecimo to its mouth in the Ligurian Sea is about 11 kilometers. The catchment area of the river has a surface of 140 square kilometers and, in addition to the aforementioned Genoa, Ceranesi and Campomorone, extends over its tributaries to the municipalities of Mignanego , Serra Riccò and Sant'Olcese .
The Polcevera follows a main axis that is almost orthogonal to the coastline and extends north-south. In the direction of the Apennines, the river with its tributaries opens in a fan shape. The highest point within its catchment area, the on the watershed between Liguria and the Po Valley lying Monte Taccone is with 1113 meters. The adjacent hydrological catchment areas are west the basin of Varenna , in the north of the basin of the Stura , Gorzente , Lemme and Scrivia and in the east the basins of the Bisagno and some smaller rivers in the area of Sampierdarena and San Teodoro .
