Pontedecimo (in Ligurian : Pontedêximo ) is a district of the northern Italian port city of Genoa . It is located in the extreme northern periphery of the city in Val Polcevera . On its territory, the two Torrente Verde and Riccò flow together to form the Polcevera .

history

The ancient village of Pontedecimo was one of the first settlements in the upper part of Val Polcevera. It originated in close proximity to the Pons ad decimum milium , also Pons ad decimum lapidem from Januensi Urbe ( Latin : "The bridge that is ten Roman miles from Genoa"), a bridge over the Riccò torrent from the Roman era or the Middle ages . The place name also comes from her. From here the Via Postumia led uphill on the opposite valley slope over the Ligurian Apennines . After passing through the towns of Cesino and Langasco , she reached the Passo della Bocchetta .

The strategic location on an important road connecting the Liguria region with the Po Valley favored the development of Pontedecimo. So it was initially trade, craft and service businesses for travelers that arose there. Over the centuries, the village grew around the center, which was the chapel of San Giacomo , built in 1167, and then expanded further into the periphery. In the High Middle Ages a small fortress was built near the bridge, but it was destroyed in the 13th century during the clashes between the Ghibellines and Guelphs , which were devastating for the entire valley .

Infrastructure

Pontedecimo is passed by the provincial road SP35, which connects the city of Genoa to the Po Valley via the Passo dei Giovi . In addition, the provincial road SP5 has its origin here. It leads over the Passo della Bocchetta to the neighboring region of Piedmont and the localities of Voltaggio , Carrosio , Gavi Ligure and Arquata Scrivia . The nearest motorway is the driveway Genoa Bolzaneto the A7 motorway .

Pontedecimo has its own train station on the Sampierdarena - Ronco Scrivia railway line , which is only served by local trains. The long-distance connections Turin – Genoa and Milan – Genoa run over a nearby railway line built in the 19th century. This runs above the valley with a view over the residential areas of Pontedecimo.
