Sampierdarena (formerly also San Pier d'Arena ) is a formerly independent city near Genoa , Liguria and today's district of Genoa . San Pier is located at the mouth of the Torrente (torrent) Polcevera in the Ligurian Sea and had 67,741 inhabitants in 2000. At the Sampierdarena railway station of the same name, the two main railway lines fork along the coast and across the Apennines to the north.

history

The name of the place San Pier d'Arena means, for example, Saint Peter from the beach and is said to go back to the legend that it was here that Saint Peter first set foot on Roman soil to be the first pope of the Christian community. In 1881, San Pier d'Arena had 19,501 residents.

Attractions

San Pier d'Arena has an old parish church with tombs of Doria , several palaces and villas (including the Villa Imperiale, now Scassi, from the 16th century) and the Palazzo Spinola .

Culture

The former club of the place SG Sampierdarenese became today's well-known first division club Sampdoria Genoa through merger with a Genoese soccer club .
