The Autostrada A7 ( Italian for 'Motorway A7'), also called Autostrada dei Giovi or “Serravalle”, is an Italian motorway in the north-west of the country that runs from Milan to Genoa . It is 133.6 km long and along its entire length toll . The motorway lies in the Italian regions of Lombardy , Piedmont and Liguria .

The A7 connects the economic center of Milan with the port city of Genoa on the Ligurian Sea and is the most important link between the two cities.

Section Milan - A7 / A26

The motorway starts in Milan, near Piazza Belfanti . It has two interchanges in the urban area of Milan. Near the Milan suburb of Assago, it crosses the western bypass of Milan, the A50 . Here begins Kilometrierung the A7.

The A7 has been expanded to six lanes in the Milan section to the bridge over the Po . The A53 branches off at Bereguardo and leads to Pavia . The motorway also crosses the Ticino here . At Casei Gerola there is an expressway connection to Voghera . At Tortona it reaches the junction with the A21 , which leads to Turin or Brescia . Section A7 / A26 - Genoa

From here the motorway is only expanded to four lanes. The A7 follows the course of the Scrivia River . Passing the towns of Serravalle Scrivia and Arquata Scrivia , it reaches the Ligurian Apennines and the Liguria region .

In this section it reaches its highest point at the Giovipass and leads over the pass on an extremely narrow and winding route for a motorway. The two lanes are not parallel to each other: the lanes to the north (Milan) were expanded into a “real” motorway in the 1960s through numerous tunnels and viaducts , while the lanes to the south (Genoa) follow the course of the old Camionale road Tal follows. The narrow curve radii and the steep incline of this route only allow speeds of 60 kilometers per hour over long sections. For this reason, the route to Genoa is around five kilometers longer than the route to Milan.

Three motorways (A7, A10 and A12 ) meet in the urban area of Genoa . For this reason there are plans to build the so-called Passante di Genova .

The core of the plans is the construction of a completely new motorway route ( Gronda di Ponente ) between the A10 near Vesima and the A7 in the urban area of Genoa (at the Bolzaneto junction ). This route serves as a supplement to the existing A10 and is to be built with four lanes, i.e. two lanes in each direction, with hard shoulder . 89% of this new route will be run in tunnels. The plans also provide for the construction of a bridge over the Val Polcevera near Bolzaneto.

Furthermore, the A7 in the north direction between Genova Ovest and Bolzaneto will be given a completely new route. The node at Genova Ovest is to be made more efficient in the course of the construction work.

In the years 2005 to 2009, several route variants were examined , whereby the decision was ultimately made for the one described above. A total of 53 km will run in tunnels and 34.8 km will be added to the road network. The estimated costs amount to 3,147.7 million euros . A start of construction has not yet been set.
