The lighthouse of Genoa ( Italian : Torre della Lanterna di Genova ) is the port lighthouse of the Ligurian regional capital Genoa .
In addition to its function as a nocturnal navigation aid, the lighthouse has become the main symbol of the port city of Genoa.
The tower itself stands on the hill of San Benigno near the Sampierdarena district . At 76 meters high , it is the tallest lighthouse in Europe. It consists of two stone blocks and has two viewing platforms.
history
The first tower at this point was built around 1128. It was made up of three crenellated parts and was about the same height as today's tower. An open fire was initially used as a beacon. From 1326 an oil lantern was used. During the battle of the Genoese against French troops, the tower was badly damaged in 1506. In 1543 it was rebuilt in its current form. In 1840 rotating beacon optics with Fresnel lenses were installed. The lighting system was improved in 1881 and 1913 and finally achieved a luminosity of 520,000 IK . In 1936 the lighthouse was electrified, its luminosity reached 745,000 IK. After being damaged in World War II , the tower was restored in 1956.
The city derby of the two Genoese football clubs CFC Genoa and Sampdoria Genoa is named Derby della Lanterna after the city's landmark.
