Passante di Genova
The Passante di Genova is a road construction project in the greater area of the Italian city of Genoa . It is intended to relieve the existing road network in the urban area and has been discussed since the 1980s. The core of the project is the newly built Gronda di Ponente motorway . The project gained new relevance with the collapse of the Polcevera Viaduct on August 14, 2018.

Three motorways ( A7 , A10 and A12 ) meet in the urban area of Genoa . Due to the difficult terrain with steep slopes for road construction, these motorways extend far into the urban area and, due to the high age of the route, are not designed to meet the latest standards in motorway construction. In addition, the motorways in the Genoa area have to accommodate a high proportion of transit traffic and commuters . Especially in summer, when there is a lot of tourist traffic on the Italian Riviera , this usually leads to overloading of the motorway network.
Planning
The core of the plans is the construction of a completely new motorway route (Gronda di Ponente) between the A10 near Vesima and the A7 in the urban area of Genoa (at the Genova / Bolzaneto junction). This route is to serve as a supplement to the existing A10 and will be built with four lanes with two lanes in each direction and hard shoulder . 89% of this new route will be in tunnels. The plans also envisage the construction of a bridge over the Val Polcevera near Genova / Bolzaneto.
Furthermore, the A7 in the north direction between Genova / Ovest and Bolzaneto will be given a completely new route. The node at Genova / Ovest is to be made more efficient in the course of the construction work.
In the years 2005 to 2009 several route variants were examined , whereby the decision was ultimately made for the one described above. A total of 53 km will run in tunnels and 34.8 km will be added to the road network. The projected cost is 3.15 billion euros. The start of construction has not yet been set.
