Ernst Roeber (born June 23, 1849 in Elberfeld , Rhine Province , † November 2, 1915 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Roeber was born as the son of the banker and writer Friedrich Roeber (1819–1901) in Elberfeld (today Wuppertal ). The father was an authorized signatory there and later a partner in the Von der Heydt, Kersten and Sons banking house . After he had attended the grammar school in Elberfeld (1858–1867) and passed the Abitur there, Ernst Roeber - like his younger brother Fritz (1851–1924) - received his artistic training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . He also received private lessons from the painter Eduard Bendemann . From 1880 to 1901 he taught himself at the Düsseldorf Academy. On May 23, 1901, in Elberfeld, he married Helene Schlieper, née Baum (1846–1912), the widow of the industrialist Gustav Schlieper . That year he went to Berlin , but later returned to Düsseldorf. Roeber was a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft and the artists' association Malkasten .

Roeber mainly created allegories, history and battle pictures as well as decorative art. His work is assigned to Wilhelminism . As an illustrator, he worked for book publishers and magazines, including Die Gartenlaube .
