Life

Schaarschmidt was born in Bonn as the son of the historian of philosophy and head of the Bonn University Library, Professor Carl Schaarschmidt (1822–1908). From 1880 to 1889 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There were Hugo Crola , Peter Janssen d. Ä. and Wilhelm Sohn , temporarily also Eduard Gebhardt and Carl Ernst Forberg , his teachers. As a practicing artist, Schaarschmidt turned to open-air painting . He often decorated his landscape paintings with figures in antique robes.

At the request of Peter Janssen the Elder Ä. Schaarschmidt was appointed curator of the art collection of the Düsseldorf Academy in 1893 as the successor to Theodor Levin . As such, he also taught. He also began to make a name for himself as an art writer and as a contributor to the art magazine Die Kunst für alle . The work on the history of Düsseldorf art , which was published in 1902 by the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia , is considered to be his most important work . He was also a member of the Düsseldorf Masonic Lodge Rose and Acacia .

Serious ailment caused him to go to Böblingen near Stuttgart in 1901 to recover. There he died at the age of 39. Hermann Board was appointed as his successor as curator of the art collections, as librarian and secretary of the art academy .
