Fritz Roeber

Fritz Roeber (born October 15, 1851 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † May 15, 1924 in Düsseldorf ) was a German history painter of the Düsseldorf School , illustrator and lithographer . As director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy , he carried out groundbreaking structural changes, in particular the incorporation of parts of the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts in 1919.

Roeber, son of the Elberfeld authorized signatory and writer Friedrich Roeber (1819–1901), attended the Elberfeld high school for nine years (Abitur 1869). He then studied painting with Eduard Bendemann as a private student . He interrupted his studies to participate in the Franco-German War . In the 1870s he made his appearance through large lithographs with biblical themes. He accepted a handicraft order from the Rhine Province and designed the figurative jewelry for a gold cup that was to be presented to the then Prince Wilhelm as a wedding gift. As co-founder and director of the Düsseldorf “Central-Gewerbe-Verein”, he played a major role in the development of the Rhenish arts and crafts . From 1893 he taught at the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf . He began to give lectures on "costume studies" which were very popular among students. At the turn of the century he was one of the initiators of the 1902 industrial and commercial exhibition in Düsseldorf , in particular the source of ideas for the development of Golzheimer Insel as its exhibition site. In 1904 he was chairman of the International Art Exhibition and Great Horticultural Exhibition in and at the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf and in early 1094 a memorial plaque was erected in his honor in the Kunstpalast, which was designed by Heinz Müller and cast in the Oberkassel bronze foundry "Förster & Kracht" .

From 1908 to 1921 he was director of the Düsseldorf Academy. At that time, he and the art academy he headed had a reputation for being conservative, and around 1900 some even regarded the academy as a “refuge for the Wilhelmine art reaction”. Nevertheless, he advocated groundbreaking structural innovations. In 1909, workshops for church art and glass painting were set up under Roeber's initiative. In 1919 parts of the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts were incorporated into the Art Academy. In order to underpin the expansion of the art academy to include architecture and various branches of applied art, seven new teachers were brought to the academy and committed under Roeber's aegis, the painter Ludwig Heupel , the sculptor Hubert Netzer , the graphic artist Ernst Aufseeser and three architects: Wilhelm Kreis , the previous director of the Kunstgewerbeschule, Emil Fahrenkamp and Fritz Becker . With the construction of new academy and studio buildings on the “Golzheimer Heide”, a complex called “New Art Academy” near the banks of the Rhine there, he realized the idea of ​​an “art city based on the English model”. With all these measures, Roeber followed progressive positions in the contemporary discussion on art reform.

In 1905 Fritz Roeber received the Commander's Cross II. Class of the Baden Order of the Zähringer Löwen and the Lippe House Order II. Class , and in 1921 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Düsseldorf . Fritz-Roeber-Straße on the north side of the main building of the Düsseldorf Art Academy is a reminder of him. His brother Ernst (1849–1915) also taught at the art academy.

Roeber's grave is in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery .
