Ernst Aufseeser (born May 29, 1880 in Nuremberg , † December 12, 1940 in Schmidtheim , Eifel) was a German painter , lithographer , xylograph , graphic designer and university lecturer . From 1914 to 1933 he taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Life

Aufseeser was born the son of a businessman and was supposed to pursue the same profession as his father. Therefore, he completed an apprenticeship at the Nuremberg Commercial School from 1886 to 1889. He then volunteered at a Nuremberg export company and stayed in England. After that, however, he embarked on an artistic career. From 1900 to 1903 he was with the Steglitzer Werkstätten in Berlin under the direction of Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke , who represented a reform of commercial graphics. From 1903 Ehmcke taught surface and graphic art at the academy. He later appointed Ernst Aufseeser as his successor. Aufseeser had previously been taught nude studies by the Munich painter Christhold und Gröber from 1903 to 1905 and had attended the London Slade School of Art for two years . In 1907 he worked as an artist in Munich . In 1910 he presented pile embroidery in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Düsseldorf . From 1914 he taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. After the seizure of power , Aufseeser was dismissed from the teaching post because he was of Jewish descent according to the definition of the Nuremberg Laws .
