Johann Friedrich Gerhard Roeber (born June 19, 1819 in Elberfeld , † October 12, 1901 in Düsseldorf ) was a German writer .

Life

Friedrich Roeber was the son of a master turner and attended the Elberfeld secondary school. In 1834 he began commercial training at the von der Heydt-Kersten & Sons bank . There he became a clerk, received power of attorney and became a partner in 1872. In 1879 he left the company and moved to Düsseldorf in 1894.

In 1840 he took part in an Elberfeld literary circle, which u. a. Adolf Schults , Carl de Haas and Friedrich Engels belonged. He later distanced himself from Friedrich Engels. In 1847 he married Maria Wilhelmine Elise, b. Kretzmann. He became known as a playwright, novelist and historian. Roeber belonged to the Wuppertal poet group.

Between 1860 and 1864 he appeared with publications in the Morgenblatt for educated readers . A year and a half before his death, Roeber suffered a stroke. In a moment of mental confusion, he burned numerous letters to him from Schults and de Haas. Five years after his death, a memorial was placed on Carnapsplatz in the north of Elberfeld (destroyed in World War II).

The painters Fritz (1849–1924) and Ernst Roeber (1851–1915) were his sons.
