Johann Richard Seel (born February 2, 1819 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ); † January 12, 1875 there ) was a German painter, graphic artist and caricaturist from Vormärz . In 1842 he designed the famous picture of the German Michel .

biography

Seel was the son of the pewter founder Hermann Seel and his wife Wilhelmina, nee. Joest. He attended the Elberfelder Gymnasium up to the lower secondary school in 1837 and joined a literary circle to which Friedrich Engels from Barmer also belonged. From 1837 he studied painting at the Royal Art Academy in Düsseldorf under Karl Ferdinand Sohn . In 1840/41 he was a one-year volunteer in Berlin , where in 1842 his famous caricature Der deutsche Michel and other caricatures on problems of his time were created, such as the financing of the Cologne cathedral building , the entry of censorship and the radical criticism of the gospels . Then he went to Paris and studied with Paul Delaroche . In 1848 he returned to Elberfeld, sympathized with the ideas of the March Revolution , but did not take an active part.

He then became a well-known portrait and landscape painter in Elberfeld and Barmen . He was sponsored by the merchant and art patron Ludwig von Lilienthal . Seel was friends with many of the valley's poets, such as Adolf Schults , Emil Rittershaus and Carl Siebel . Seel died in Elberfeld after a long illness.
