Julius Theodor Baedeker (also Bädeker ) (born December 18, 1814 in Witten ; died March 26, 1880 in Iserlohn ) was a German bookseller and publisher .

Life

Julius Baedeker was the son of the pharmacist Friedrich Wilhelm Justus Baedeker (1788–1865) and Amalia Friederika Arnoldina (Friederike) Sybel (1786–1866). He trained as a bookseller with W. Langewiesche in Iserlohn. In 1837 he began his service as a one-year volunteer. For a short time he was a student at the University of Halle to history and philosophy to hear.

He was the nephew of Gottschalk Diedrich Baedeker and after his death in 1841 he continued to run his company in Essen until January 1, 1844, when his sons Eduard (1817–1879) and Julius Baedeker became owners. On November 1, 1843, he founded the "Book and Art Dealer Julius Baedeker" in Elberfeld . In addition to the publisher, it published the “Elberfelder Zeitung” and “Blätter für Frauenbildung”. In 1845 he was in contact with Moses Hess and Friedrich Engels .

On June 13, 1845 he married Bertha Carolina Hermina Obertüschen (1824-1856). The marriage had four children: Maria Emilia (Emmy) Baedeker (born 1846), Hugo Friedrich Johann Baedeker (1847–1904), Paul Baedeker (born 1851) and Franz Julius Baedeker (born 1855). He was a member of the Freemason lodge Hermann zum Land der Berge in Elberfeld since 1845 and Zur Deutschen Redlichkeit in Iserlohn since 1853. Johann Jakob Kruse supported Julius Baedeker from 1847 with the publication of the newspaper “Iserlohner Wochenblatt”.

His son Hugo Baedeker became co-owner of the “Julius Baedeker” publishing house in Iserlohn and later in Leipzig. Julius Theodor Baedeker died on March 26, 1880 in Iserlohn. He was buried in the main cemetery in Iserlohn .

The Baedeker-Straße in Witten and Iserlohn is named after him.
