Julius Baedeker

Julius Baedeker (born August 21, 1821 in Essen ; † November 22, 1898 there ) was a German publisher , bookseller and editor. He was the son of Gottschalk Diedrich Baedeker , founder of GD Baedeker Verlag and city councilor in Essen.

After attending school, Julius Baedeker did an apprenticeship as a bookseller with his eldest brother Karl Baedeker in Koblenz , founder and author of the Baedeker travel guide . He was a member of the Euterpier student association and in 1841 became a member of the Bonner Wingolf . In 1844, Julius and his brother Eduard (1817–1879) took over their parents' business, GD Baedeker Verlag in Essen, which consisted of a bookstore, book publisher and printer and was expanded to include other branches. Julius Baedeker married Clara, née Wilberg (* 1837; † 1923) and in second marriage, Berta née Barth (* December 29, 1826; † October 4, 1856).

Julius was particularly interested in educational authors. In addition, he sponsored the publication of the journal for all natural sciences , the mountain and hut calendar and the engineering calendar . He was also the editor-in-chief of Allgemeine Politische Nachrichten , which was the Essener Zeitung from 1860 to 1882 and from 1883 to 1944, after merging with the Westfälische Zeitung , the Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitung . This paper had already been founded in 1738 as the latest Essendische Nachrichten von Staats- und Academensachen . Julius Baedeker was head of the newspaper until 1883 and head of the publishing house until 1894.

Julius Baedeker was buried in the cemetery at Kettwiger Tor . When it was abandoned in 1955 for urban planning reasons, his grave was transferred to the Ostfriedhof in Essen as part of the grave of his son-in-law, the banker and secret councilor Albert Müller . He had married Julius' daughter Emmy Baedeker in Essen in 1882.
