Robert Schlagintweit , from 1859 from Schlagintweit (born October 27, 1833 in Munich , † June 6, 1885 in Gießen ), was a German traveler and explorer .

family

Schlagintweit was the son of the imperial real councilor and ophthalmologist Joseph Schlagintweit (1791-1854).

He and his brother Hermann were raised to the Bavarian hereditary nobility on August 28, 1859 (Berchtesgaden) with a diploma from November 24, 1859 (Munich) and enrolled in the noble class in the Kingdom of Bavaria on December 12, 1859 .

Life

Robert was the younger brother of Hermann and Adolf Schlagintweit and undertook the famous trip to India with them after graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1852 and then studying at the University of Munich , which led to numerous important insights into the high mountain world of the Himalayas .

Robert initially took part in the geological and meteorological exploration of the Alps ; he contributed a paper for the New Investigations on the Physical Geography and the Geology of the Alps (Leipzig 1854).

After Hermann and Adolf von Schlagintweit had the opportunity to go on a scientific trip to India through Alexander von Humboldt , Robert also took part in this expedition . From Bombay they first went on two separate paths through the Dekkan to Madras , from where Adolf and Robert went to the north-western mountains of the Himalayas and explored the high passes and giant glaciers of the western part of the Himalayas. He and Adolf reached a height of 6,785 m on the 7,756 m high Kamet , which was a record for the time.

He spent the winter of 1855 to 1856 with Adolf on the Indian peninsula and then met the older Hermann in May 1856 in Schimla . The brothers then explored the mountains of High Asia, Kashmir , Ladakh and Baltistan . Together with Hermann Robert went over the Karakoram Mountains and the Kwen-lun to the Chinese Turkestan . This is where the most important results of the three-year research expedition emerged. After returning, they separated again and Robert went through the valley of the Indus and embarked for Egypt in the spring of 1857 . Hermann arrived here in the summer and together they traveled back to Europe (June 7, 1857 arrival in Trieste ).

For the numerous research results, see article Hermann von Schlagintweit .

King Maximilian II raised Robert and Hermann von Schlagintweit to the hereditary nobility. Robert became the first professor of geography in Gießen in 1864 , and in 1869 and 1880 traveled the USA from New York to San Francisco.

Robert von Schlagintweit died on June 6, 1885 in Giessen, where he is buried in the old cemetery .

Awards

On March 7, 1862 he received from Grand Duke Ludwig III. from Hessen awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Hessian Order of Ludewig . The framework conditions for the award are on record: on February 28, 1862, he had already met Prime Minister v. Dalwigk sought an audience with the Grand Duke. Grand Duke Ludwig III reacted to this. on March 1, 1862 as follows: Please bring out what he wants from me, I don't know him at all . Thereupon v. Dalwigk wrote to Grand Duke Ludwig III on March 2, 1862, that the real reason for the audience was that von Schlagintweit wanted to put his travel work across India at the feet of the Grand Duke . It was a multi-volume, large-format work. It is decorated several times. The travel company of the same has been supported by the English government. I do not doubt that Robert von Schlagintweit finally speculates on an order. However, there is no suitable reason for such a demonstration of grace . As a side note from Grand Duke Ludwig III. on the letter: I will receive him the day after tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4th, at ½ 11 am . Finally, on March 9, 1862, Robert von Schlagintweit received another audience with Grand Duke Ludwig III, in order to be able to express his thanks for the award he had received orally at his feet .

Robert von Schlagintweit was an honorary member of the natural research society in Bamberg.

The plant genera Schlagintweitia Griseb. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) and Schlagintweitiella Ulbr. from the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) are named after the three brothers Adolf Schlagintweit , Hermann von Schlagintweit and Robert von Schlagintweit.

The Russian Geographical Society erected an obelisk for Adolf von Schlagintweit on the site of his death , but it was destroyed as a result of a flood .
