Baltistan ("Land of the Balti"; Urdu بلتستان, Balti :بلتیول Baltiyul ; also called Little Tibet ) is a region and a division in the Pakistani- administered part of the Kashmir region .

The main town is Skardu . The mountainous region lies between the Karakoram and the Himalayas and administratively forms one of the three agencies of the special territory under the federal administration of Gilgit-Baltistan , which was formerly known as Northern Areas. The area extends over the following five valleys: Skardu, Khaplu, Shigar, Kharmang and Rondu.

The Baltistan division is divided into four districts: Skardu and Ghanche and, since their split from Skardu in 2015, Kharmang and Shigar .

The inhabitants are the Muslim Balti , who are of predominantly Tibetan , but also of Tatar , Mon , Dardic , Indo-Iranian and Arab descent. The native language is Balti , a West Tibetan dialect.
