Ludwig Wilhelm Heupel-Siegen (born June 20, 1864 in Siegen , Westphalia province , † March 13, 1945 in Düsseldorf ) was a Westphalian painter and university professor who mainly worked in Düsseldorf .

Career

Heupel, son of master craftsman Johann Heinrich Heupel and his wife Franziska, née Lauff, attended secondary school in Siegen from 1875 to 1882. At his father's request, he began an apprenticeship in a clerk's office at the Siegen railway maintenance office in 1882 . From 1883 to 1885 he studied at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts under Hermann Stiller . In 1885 he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . He then stayed in Italy from 1892 onwards due to a Rome scholarship from the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin . This enabled him to stay in the Villa Strohl-Fern . As early as 1890, the portrait painter Heupel, who also created genre , historical and industrial pictures as well as still lifes , exhibited his works in the Glaspalast in Munich. After teaching at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts from 1894 as a specialist teacher for life drawing and anatomy, from 1904 he also accepted a teaching position at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1919 he completed his habilitation and became a professor at the women's art school at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf. His students included the painters Paul Biesemann , Emil Bollmann , Barthel Gilles , Wilhelm Hambüchen , Alfred Holler , Wilhelm Palmes and Hans Vilz . In Düsseldorf, where Heupel-Siegen died at the age of 80, he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association .
