Alfred Holler

Alfred Holler (born September 5, 1888 in Krefeld , † December 18, 1954 in Eupen ) was a German landscape painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

Alfred Holler studied from 1906 to 1908 at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts with Peter Behrens and Ludwig Heupel-Siegen . After a short stay in Paris , he continued his studies from 1908 to 1910 at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe with Julius Bergmann and from 1911 to 1913 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with the landscape painter Ludwig Dill .

Through his college friend Walter Ophey , Holler moved to Eupen as early as 1910, where he founded a family in 1917 and worked until his death. During the First World War he worked as a war painter in Vilnius . Here he discovered his preference for crooked houses, narrow alleys and enchanted corners.

Holler's works include oil paintings, watercolors , woodcuts , etchings and graphics . He is considered one of the most important Eifel painters , his work is now considered to be Impressionist Realism.

For his work, Holler u. a. High awards from the Belgian state:

  • 1910: House award from the Grand Duke of Baden, Friedrich II, for the painting "Cow's Head"
  • 1934: Knight of the Order of the Crown
  • 1954: Knight of the Order of Leopold II .
