In memory of Barthel Gilles, a path in Wees was named after him.

Barthel Gilles (born August 31, 1891 in Rendsburg , † November 19, 1977 in Wees near Flensburg ) was a German painter of the New Objectivity .

1905–1908 he learned a decorative painter in Koblenz and Cologne. 1909–1911 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Wilhelm Döringer and Ludwig Heupel-Siegen , had to do military service from 1914–1918 and was wounded. In 1929 he joined the KPD and in 1933 took part in the first National Socialist art exhibition Westkunst in Essen. From 1938 he was represented at exhibitions of the German Labor Front, NS-Gemeinschaft Kraft durch Freude . In 1943, numerous plants were destroyed in a bomb attack.

Some of his works are in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen . At the building at Heidenweg 29, in the Wees-Bahnhof district of Wees , the house in which he last lived, there is a wall painting of a sailing ship by Barthel Gilles. The nearby path, which leads from the district to the Weesrieser wood in the south, was named Barthel-Gilles Weg ( location ).
