Wilhelm "Willi" Döringer (born January 2, 1862 in Oestrich ; † April 21, 1926 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter and lithographer from the Düsseldorf School and professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Life

Döringer first completed a year-long apprenticeship as a lithographer. From 1878 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1882 to 1889 he was a master student of Eduard Gebhardt . In Düsseldorf Döringer was a member of the artists' association Malkasten and the Free Association of Düsseldorf Artists . From 1883 he made drawings for the cathedral in Münster , first with Louis Feldmann , from 1884 in collaboration with Bruno Ehrich , until 1908 also for numerous other church decorations , for example in the Pauluskirche Dessau (together with the church painter Otto Berg ), in the Ringkirche Wiesbaden , in the Liebfrauenkirche Trier and in the Schleswig Cathedral . Until 1912 he worked with the church painter Bernhard Gauer . In 1896 he set up a studio in Düsseldorf's Eiskellerberg and at the end of 1900 bought a house in Rosenstrasse, which the painter Gerhard Janssen also moved into. House number 5 next door was bought by Heinrich Kraeger , a professor of literary history . From 1908 to 1926 he was professor of church art at the Düsseldorf Academy. Among his students were Barthel Gilles , Oswald Petersen , Paul Biesemann , Hanna Fonk (1906–1969) and Otto von Wille (1901–1978). Döringer, who was friends with the businessman Josef Peiner (1867-1945), made it possible for his son Werner Peiner in 1918 to sit in at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf for six months before he enrolled there from 1919 for regular studies.

Works (selection)

Mosaic in the temple of the Hilden-Eyckeler family at the Nordfriedhof Düsseldorf : The orthodox-looking wall mosaic was made in the colors gold, white and blue. The open book in the angel's hand bears the text from Revelation 10: 6: “There will be no more time from now on”.

Döringer's religious history paintings, kept in a naturalistic style, show the influences of the Düsseldorf late Nazarene population , but are also based on the works of his teacher Gebhardt. Landscape and portrait pictures are also part of Döringer's oeuvre.
