The Pauluskirche is a Protestant church in the “Am Leipziger Tor” quarter of the city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt . It was badly damaged by air raids in World War II and rebuilt in a simplified manner.

history

The Pauluskirche was built between 1889 and 1892 in neo-Gothic style based on designs by the Berlin architect Johannes Otzen , who was particularly successful in the area of evangelical sacred buildings. The building is made of red brick . Particularly noteworthy are the slender tower standing on the north side, the mosaic pictures above the main portal (portrait of Christ, a mosaic in St. Apollinare in Ravenna ) and on the two small west portals ( Moses , John the Baptist ) by Wilhelm Döringer . Originally this church had 900 seats. The interior with its columns, arches and vaults is characterized by the red shaped stones. Even the pulpit, the baptismal font and the altar are made of this material.

During the Second World War the church was badly damaged in two bomb attacks. She lost the main roof and all the windows. By December 24, 1949, the congregation was able to prepare the church to such an extent that services could be held again. Until 1982 the Pauluskirche could only partially be made usable again. In the period from 1982 to 1985 restorations and alterations were carried out. The western part was separated and converted into a community center. Furthermore, the nave was reduced in size during these renovations. In this context, the existing organ was replaced by the Adam organ built in 1955 for St. John's Church.

In the entrance area of the tower, the sculptor Claus Lutz Gaedicke from Halle created a memorial and memorial in the form of a resurrection lamb , a restored sgraffito medallion .
