In 1882 he became director of the commercial drawing school in Kassel, from 1884 to 1903 he was the first director of the newly founded Kunstgewerbeschule Düsseldorf. He then settled in Cologne as a freelance architect .

Stiller was a member of the Düsseldorf Architects and Engineers Association , where he was temporarily deputy chairman. After moving to Cologne, he switched to the local architects and engineers association for Lower Rhine and Westphalia . He became a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA), and the Cologne branch of the BDA later made him an honorary member.
