( Linnaeus , 1758)

Symmorphus murarius is a hymenoptera fromthe wasps family (Vespidae).

features

The animals reach a body length of 14 to 17 millimeters (females) or 9 to 13 millimeters (males). Their body is yellow-black in color, with the first tergite having a black transverse edge. The pleures of the mesonotum and the metanotum are long and lightly haired.

Occurrence

The species occurs in Europe, but in the south only in the mountains. It colonizes various sunny habitats, also in the settlement area. The animals fly in one generation from early May to mid-August. The species is rare in Central Europe, and the populations are also in decline.

Way of life

The nest is created in open, sunlit beetle bores in the dead wood and seldom probably also in reeds. Above all, beetle tunnels between six and eight millimeters in old oaks and also oak stakes are particularly popular. One or two cells are created per nest, with the egg hanging on the back of the cell from a thread. Five to eight larvae of leaf beetles are introduced into the cells of the female brood and three to five of the male larvae . In particular, the poplar leaf beetle ( Chrysomela populi ) is used for this. The cell partition walls are made with a fine clay mortar. After the brood cells, an attrium at least six centimeters long and occasionally additional empty cells are created. Then the nest is closed with a lid made of wood fibers. The species can be easily distinguished from the other species of the subfamily on the basis of its nest. The larvae can also be easily identified by their gray-green color and the wavy, white vertical stripes. The larvae pupate after 10 to 14 days in a double-walled cocoon , with the feces being spun over. The species is parasitized by Chrysis fulgida , Chrysis longula and Chrysis iris .
