Runner at the Murtenlauf in 2009

The Murtenlauf - in French: Course Morat-Friborg - is an annual fun run in Switzerland that has been held since 1933. The distance is 17.17 km in hilly terrain from Murten to Freiburg . The date of the event is always the first Sunday in October. In addition to the full-distance run, there are categories that start in Courtepin (8.6 km).

history

The Murtenlauf commemorates the messenger who, according to the legend of the Murtenlaufer, informed the Freiburg people of the outcome of the Battle of Murten (1476). He is said to have collapsed after the news of victory was announced and died shortly afterwards. The narrative is similar to the story of the Battle of Marathon.

From 1933 to 1976 the route was 16.4 km, from 1977 to 1995 17.15 km.

Participation was reserved for men until 1977. In 1973 Marijke Moser was the first woman to take part in the Murtenlauf after she had registered under a man's name. Shortly before the goal, they used force to prevent men from running. The organizers then publicly criticized her then husband for not having a grip on his wife. The public and the media supported Moser, however, and from 1977 women could officially take part in the Murtenlauf.

In 2016, both victories at the Murten-Freiburg memorial run went back to Swiss for the first time since 1998.
