Porto Novo

Porto Novo is a city on the island of Santo Antão , in Cape Verde . It is the seat of the Freguesia São João Baptista (Santo Antão) and the Concelhos Porto Novo . The city is located on the south coast of the island, opposite the São Vicente island . In 2010 the city had 9,310 inhabitants, which makes it the largest settlement on the island and one of the largest cities in the country.

The place used to be called Carvoeiros . Over time it developed into the main port of the island. The port has recently been enlarged. Many streams, most of which are no longer than 300 to 400 m, shape the area. In the past the place only extended over three of the valleys , today it already spans six of them.

In the 1960s the Estrada da Corda was built, which connects Porto Novo and Ribeira through the valleys and ridges of the eastern crater rim. Most of the road is extremely dangerous because of the curves. Since 2009, the Porto Novo-Janela Road , which was built along part of the Ribeira Grande-Paul-Porto Novo Road (Estrada Litoral), has connected the easternmost point of the island with the town and makes the dangerous Estrada da Corda superfluous. In 2012, a 7 km long section of the Porto Novo-Norte / Topo da Coroa road up to the newly opened Pozzolano brick factory was expanded to four lanes.
