Tren del Sur

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tren del Sur is a planned railway line on the Canary Island of Tenerife , which will connect the island's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife with Adeje in the south of the island. With a speed of up to 220 km / h, a drive from Santa Cruz to Adeje should take 40 minutes. In addition to passenger traffic, goods traffic will also take place on the route. The train connection is intended to relieve the TF-1 southern motorway .

course

The route will lead from Santa Cruz along the TF-1 via Candelaria , Granadilla de Abona and Playa de Las Américas to Adeje. Most of the route should run in tunnels or elevated.

history

Train connections on Tenerife have been considered for over 100 years. In 2009, the Cabildo Insular approved a 1997 plan for an 80-kilometer train route from Santa Cruz to Adeje, with a possible extension to Fonsalía, a district of Guía de Isora . The cost of the project was estimated at 1.8 billion euros, with the island government having 8.3 million euros available for the planning phase. Construction should start in 2011 and be completed in 2017 at the earliest. With a frequency of 15 minutes in each direction, 30,000 passengers per day were expected. After the project was temporarily put on hold for financial reasons, the central government in Madrid provided the Cabildo with 11 million euros for the infrastructure in 2016. The expected costs are now estimated at over 2.2 billion euros, which is why the construction will be implemented in several stages. In 2015 it was announced that construction would begin in 2016 with a 16-kilometer section from Santa Cruz to Candelaria. So far (as of 2017), however, no construction work has started and no new date for the start of construction is known.

criticism

In addition to ecological concerns, the train project is criticized for the fact that there is no need for a train connection, since the buses would be sufficient for local public transport and promoting the bus as a means of transport would be more effective. Employees of the local public transport company TITSA therefore submitted a collection of signatures against the project to Carlos Alonso, the island's president.

Tren del Norte

A train connection to the capital is also planned for the north of the island, although this is still in the planning phase as no project planning has yet been carried out and an environmental report is missing. Construction should start in 2017 at the earliest; construction in several stages is also planned here. The route should run parallel to the TF-5 northern motorway from Santa Cruz via Tacoronte to Puerto de la Cruz or even further to Icod de los Vinos . The costs are estimated at around 1.6 billion euros.
