Agulo is the smallest of the six municipalities on the Canary Island of La Gomera . The well-preserved, original village of Agulo is the headquarters of the municipality.
General
The Gomeros earn their living with agriculture , fishing, the cultivation of wine and bananas ( Platanos ). The landscape is characterized by fertile terraced fields, steep cliffs and a wonderful view of the sea. The tourism is limited to day-trippers and a few guest rooms.
The place Agulo , known by the locals as the green balcony , consists of two parts. In the lower region lies Agulo Casco , surrounded by a natural amphitheater, in which the three towns of La Montañeta , Las Casas , El Charco , and, somewhat out of the way, the homestead Caserio de Lepe are located. Above is the center of Agulo at an altitude of about 250 meters, it was founded in the 20s of the 17th century. The closed form of settlement Agulos is unique. The higher area of Sobreagulo with the districts Las Rosas , La Palmita , Meriga (the Meriga forest was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO ) and Cruz de Tierno are near the Garajonay National Park . The humble population continues to produce the island's typical handicrafts. The Abrante viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the Agulo basin with the island of Tenerife as a background.
