David de la Cruz Malgarejo (born May 6, 1989 in Sabadell ) is a Spanish cyclist .

Career

David de la Cruz was a member of the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team from 2010 to 2012 , before joining the NetApp-Endura team in 2013 .

De la Cruz finished second in the Tour of Asturias in 2012, when he took part in the Vuelta a España for the first time in 2013 , he had to drop out in the meantime. The 2014 Tour de France he could not finish, after being in the course of the 12th stage was overthrown.

For the 2015 season he switched to the UCI WorldTeam Etixx-Quick Step . He finished the Giro d'Italia 2015 in 34 and took part in the Tour of Spain that same year, which he had to break off after the fifth stage.

At the Giro d'Italia 2016 , de la Cruz got out after the 16th stage because he had a fever. The Vuelta a España was more successful : he achieved his first professional victory during the ninth stage from a breakaway group and drove to the Maillot Rojo of the overall leader of the Tour of Spain. On the following day he had to hand over the lead to the eventual tour winner Nairo Quintana , but stayed in the top ten and surprisingly finished seventh overall.

In 2017 and 2018, de la Cruz won a stage at Paris – Nice , and he also had stage wins at the Tour of the Basque Country in 2017 and at the Tour of Andalusia in 2018.
