Sergio Andrés Higuita García (born August 1, 1997 in Medellín ) is a Colombian cyclist .

Career

Sergio Higuita began road cycling at the age of twelve and received a contract with the Colombian team Manzana Postobón in 2016 , which started as the Professional Continental Team in 2017 . In his first season he contested the Tour of Asturias and the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid as well as some races in the U23 category such as the Ronde de l'Isard .

In the 2017 season, Higuita won the mountain classification of the Tour of Asturias . At the Vuelta a Colombia , which was not on the UCI's 2018 racing calendar , Higuita won on the third stage and also won the junior ranking in fifth overall. This special classification, he also won at the Tour of China I .

For the 2019 season he was supposed to switch to the WorldTeam EF Education First , but to gain experience he would initially work for the Spanish Fundación Euskadi for half a year . For his team he won the youngsters' classification of the Tour of Valencia as well as his first UCI race on the fourth stage of the Volta ao Alentejo . EF Education First signed him on May 1, 2019.

The California Tour and the Tour of Poland , his first two World Tour races, he finished in second and fourth place overall. In September he started a " Grand Tour " for the first time , the Vuelta a España 2019 . Initially planned there as a mountain helper for Rigoberto Urán , who later retired , Higuita won the 18th stage of the tour as a soloist after an escape of about 50 kilometers and finished the Vuelta in 14th overall. At the road world championships, he finished fourth in the U23 road race.

In the 2020 season, Higuita became Colombian road racing champion, won the overall standings of the Tour Colombia and finished third in the UCI WorldTour stage race Paris-Nice .
