Bjorg Lambrecht (born April 2, 1997 in Gent ; † August 5, 2019 in Rybnik ) was a Belgian cyclist . He died at the age of 22 after a fall on the third stage of the Tour of Poland .
Athletic career
In 2015 Bjorg Lambrecht became Belgian junior road racing champion. In the same year he won a stage and the mountain classification of the junior race Internationale Driedaagse van Axel . In the overall ranking of the Tour of Upper Austria for juniors, he finished second and also won the mountain classification, as well as the GP Général Patton , where he also came third. In 2016, Lambrecht became vice European junior champion in road racing and won the Ronde de l'Isard . In 2017 he won the U23 race from Liège – Bastogne – Liège and the U23 edition of the International Peace Tour .
In 2018 Lambrecht received his first contract with Team Lotto Soudal . This year he decided a stage and the junior classification of the Tour des Fjord in Norway for himself, in the overall classification he came second. At the road world championships, he finished second in the U23 road race. He started for the first time in a big country tour, the Vuelta a España , but could not finish it. The following year he was able to establish himself in the elite category in spring with fourth place at the Flèche Wallonne and sixth place at the Amstel Gold Race . At the Critérium du Dauphiné , he won the junior ranking.
Bjorg Lambrecht started the Tour of Poland at the beginning of August 2019. On the third stage he came off the rain-soaked road at race kilometer 48 and hit a concrete structure. He was resuscitated on site and transported to a hospital in Rybnik . There he died during an operation as a result of a ruptured liver . The tour was continued the next day, but the fourth stage was neutralized out of respect for Lambrecht and shortened to 133 kilometers. Lambrecht was buried in Knesselare with great sympathy .
