Michael "Mike" Woods (born October 12, 1986 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian cyclist .
Career
Woods initially devoted himself to middle-distance running , but had to give up this sport after a stress fracture in his left foot and two operations. At the age of 24, his father, whose bike he had previously rented, bought him a racing bike for around $ 1,000.
Woods rode with smaller cycling teams from 2013 until the end of the 2015 season . In 2015 he won his first races on the international calendar with the one-day race Clássica Internacional Loulé Capital Europeia do Desporto and the fifth day segment of the Tour of Utah . In the Utah Tour, a stage race in the hors category , he also came in second overall.
Woods then received a contract with the UCI WorldTeam Cannondale Pro Cycling from the 2016 season and, in his first year there, was fifth overall in the UCI WorldTour competition Tour Down Under and second at Milano-Torino . He started in the road race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and finished 55th. After finishing ninth in the classic Liège – Bastogne – Liège in spring 2017 , he contested his first Grand Tour with the Giro d'Italia , which he finished as 38th. the overall standings ended. On his second Grand Tour , the Vuelta a España 2017 , he was overall seventh.
In 2018 Woods finished second at Liège-Bastogne-Liège 37 seconds behind the runaway Bob Jungels , after 2.8 kilometers from the finish with Romain Bardet from the field of pursuers, whom he beat in the finish sprint. In the autumn of that year Woods achieved his greatest career success to date at the Vuelta a España with the victory on the difficult mountain finish of the 17th stage. A little later, at the World Championships in Innsbruck , the Canadian was third behind Romain Bardet and Alejandro Valverde in the sprint sprint of a four-man leading group that had formed on the last climb .
