Roquetas de Mar , also Roquetas , is a city in Spain on the southeastern tip of the Iberian Peninsula on the Costa de Almería in the Andalusian province of Almería , about 30 km west of the provincial capital of the same name, Almería. From a historical point of view, the urban area is divided into the actual Roquetas de Mar, a settlement that already existed in antiquity, and the urbanización Roquetas de Mar, located southwest of it, which was only created in the last few decades, where the tourist infrastructure and leisure facilities are preferably located.
economy
Roquetas is a popular holiday destination for Spaniards, Germans and English. There are long beaches here and in the neighboring coastal section of Almerimar . The place is preferably used by Germans and English as a winter domicile. Tourism is the municipality's second major economic sector, alongside fruit and vegetable growing. The area around Roquetas de Mar is characterized by greenhouses that work all year round. The city owes most of its extremely solid financial budget to these two sectors. They also caused an enormous increase in the population. While in 1900 the place only had a little more than 2000 inhabitants, the number rose to almost 13,000 inhabitants by 1970. In the following decades there was an even larger influx. Around 50,000 people lived in the city in 2001 and 96,800 on January 1, 2019.
Culture
The Punta Entinas-Sabinar nature reserve west of the Urbanización Roquetas, where hundreds of flamingos nest in the summer months, is worth seeing . Due to the new Urbanización Playa Serena Sur, the nature reserve has been reduced a little. Other attractions of Roquetas de Mar are the Castillo de Santa Ana, the lighthouse (Faro de Roquetas), the marina, the theater, the shopping center and the bullring. It is also worth visiting the nearby desert town of Tabernas, where western films by Sergio Leone were once shot, as well as the neighboring mountain villages Enix and Felix and the old town of the nearby provincial capital Almería.
For nightlife, there are numerous small pubs and discos in Roquetas de Mar, just like in the neighboring town of Aguadulce, where the young people of Roquetas and Almería celebrate their parties and festivals.
As everywhere in the province of Almería, the symbol of the Indalo is also present in Roquetas , a prehistoric figure that is now traded as a talisman in the region.
climate
The weather is determined by the Azores all year round . The rule of thumb for this region, which lies in a valley basin and is enclosed in the west and north by mountains of the Sierra de Gádor with a height of up to 2300 meters and thus only borders directly on the Mediterranean Sea in the southeast , is the following climate rule:
- February / March: Spring with occasional clouds, partly windy, an average of 18 ° C during the day, 12 ° C at night, rarely rain.
- April / May: early summer with spring winds, rarely cloudy with little rain, an average of 25 ° C during the day, 15 ° C at night.
- June to October: summer. Clouds are the exception, rather moderate wind, the temperatures in July and August to mid-September sometimes peak values of up to 40 ° C during the day and over 30 ° C at night.
- November / December / January: Autumn and winter: Occasional cloud cover, especially in November very heavy rains possible, temperatures around 16 to 20 ° C during the day and around 10 ° C at night.
When it comes to weather information about Roquetas, it should be noted that the climate in Almería, only 20 km away, is always slightly different than in Roquetas de Mar. The air here is particularly good due to the influence of the Mediterranean and can be compared to a climatic health resort.
sea
The water and its temperature are mainly influenced by the Atlantic , as the water exchange through the Strait of Gibraltar can be felt. In winter it often happens that the water is warmer than the air.
It is possible, but very rare, to see dolphins or whales from the beach . Sharks are rather rare. On many parts of the beach, the shore does not fall gently, but steeply into the sea; in some places the water is only about five meters from the beach and two meters deep.
sons and daughters of the town
- Carmen Martín (* 1988), handball player
- Eddy Pascual (* 1992), Azerbaijani-Spanish-Angolan football player
Others
In December 2015 it was announced that the main prize of the state Christmas lottery, called El Gordo , totaled 640 million euros, went entirely to local residents. The 160 tickets with the winning number were only offered at the local sales point.
