history
Small Neolithic and Bronze Age finds were made in the municipality . In Roman times the road from Cartago ( Cartagena ) to Castulo (near Linares ) ran along here. Two parts of a possibly Visigothic column shaft (?) Were found a few years ago during earthworks. The place name Velad al-Ahmar has been handed down from Islamic times ; he was on the walled castle hill (castellón) near the border with the Taifa kingdoms of Murcia and Granada. In 1488 it was recaptured ( reconquista ) by the troops of the Catholic Kings Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragón and handed over to the Duke of Alba , who, however, had to cede it to the newly created Marquisate of Vélez in 1507 . In the 16th century the settlement moved to its current location. The small town experienced its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries.
