Michał Kwiatkowski [ ˈmixaw kfjatˈkɔfski ] (born June 2, 1990 in Chełmża ) is a Polish cyclist who became world champion in road racing in 2014.
Career
Kwiatkowski achieved his first international victory in 2007 in the junior class at the International Cycling Cup in Grudziądz , where he also won the overall standings. In the same year he also won a stage and the overall classification as well as a section of the Giro della Lunigiana at the International Peace Tour . With these victories, he was able to win the overall ranking of the Junior Cycling World Cup .
At the European Road Cycling Championships in Sofia , Kwiatkowski won the silver medal in the individual time trial and gold in the road race. The next year he was successful at the Trofeo Città di Ivrea . At the International Peace Tour he won three stages and the overall ranking. At the Trofeo Karlsberg he was successful on two sections and was able to win the overall ranking. Furthermore, Kwiatkowski was European and world champion in the individual time trial in 2008. At the European championship in track cycling in Pruszków he won the bronze medal in the points race .
After Kwiatkowski won a stage in the Tour of Slovakia in 2009 , he finally switched to the Professional Continental Team Caja Rural . After a season without race wins, Kwiatkowski switched to radio shack in 2011 . There he took third place in the Three Days of West Flanders , the Three Days of De Panne and the Tour du Poitou-Charentes .
In 2012 Kwiatkowski signed a contract with the Belgian UCI ProTeam Omega Pharma Quick Step , where he was able to achieve his greatest successes as a professional cyclist. In the same year he took part in the Giro d'Italia 2012 for this . The following season he was also the Polish elite road champion and world champion in the team time trial . The 2013 Tour de France , during which he ten days the white jersey was best young rider, he finished eleventh. In 2014 he also won the Algarve Tour and the one-day race Strade Bianche . A little later he finished the one- day races Walloon Arrow and Liège – Bastogne – Liège, each of which was one of the classics , in third place.
At the end of the 2014 season, Kwiatkowski achieved his greatest success to date and became world champion in road racing in Ponferrada after he was able to break away from the field in a descent seven kilometers from the finish and then overtake a leading group on the last climb.
After finishing second in the overall ranking at the Algarve Tour and Paris – Nice , he succeeded in winning his first one-day race of the UCI WorldTour in April 2015 at the Amstel Gold Race in a sprint of a group of almost 20 people. His second victory in a World Tour one-day race in 2016 at E3 Harelbeke in a two-man sprint ahead of Peter Sagan .
In the 2017 season, Kwiatkowski won three one-day races of the WorldTour: In the Strade Bianche , he pulled away from a top group of seven on the finish slope. He won Milan – Sanremo in a three-man sprint ahead of Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe . He won the Clásica San Sebastián in a five-man sprint. With Tirreno-Adriatico 2018 Kwiatkowski won his first stage race of the WorldTour.
Cycling academy
Kwiatkowski founded a cycling academy together with the local sports university in Toruń .
