The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2018 led over 65 kilometers from Bagnères-de-Luchon to Saint-Lary-Soulan on July 25, 2018 . It was the shortest mass start stage in 30 years.

The drivers completed three mountain classifications over a distance of just 65 kilometers : the 14.9-kilometer mountain classification of the 1st category Montée de Peyragudes began with an average gradient of 6.7 percent from the start. The Col de Val Louron-Azet followed after 37 kilometers , also 1st category with an 8% gradient on 7.4 kilometers. The Col de Portet begins 16 kilometers before the stage finish , a mountain classification hors categoire with double the number of points and an 8.7 percent incline, on which the special souvenir Henri Desgrange prize was awarded. Due to the shortness and difficulty, a stage that was competitive from the start was expected.

Another special feature was the set starting order: The first 20 drivers in the overall standings with the yellow jersey in pole position started in the lead, followed by the other drivers in other groups according to their overall ranking. The organizer expects this to further increase the tension.

The stage winner was Nairo Quintana ( Movistar Team ) after an attack from the group of favorites 14 kilometers from the finish. His last companion, Daniel Martin ( Team UAD Emirates ) finished second, 28 seconds behind. The wearer of the yellow jersey, Geraint Thomas ( Team Sky ), as third of the day, 47 seconds behind, built on Tom Dumoulin (fifth, 52 seconds behind) and Thomas' team-mate, last year's winner Chris Froome (eighth, 1:35 minutes behind).

On the first ascent to the Montée de Peyragudes, Tanel Kangert attacked and won the first mountain classification. From a larger group of pursuers, the leader in the mountain classification Julian Alaphilippe and Kristijan folgendenurasek caught up in the following descent. The three of them crossed the Col de Val Louron-Azet, where Alaphilippe won the mountain classification. Đurasek lost track on the descent, as did Alaphilippe at the beginning of the Col de Portet. Kangert was the last runaway to be caught by Quintana and received the red shirt number .

The Movistar team of the stage winner Quintana, with Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde, also finished 9th and 12th in the daily standings and took the lead in the team classification .

Philippe Gilbert , who fell the day before , did not start because of a fractured kneecap. There were no other tasks.
