The 8th stage of the Tour de France 2018 led on the French national holiday , July 14, 2018, over 181 kilometers from Dreux to Amiens . The flat stage included two mountain classifications in the fourth category at 35 and 71.5 kilometers, an intermediate sprint for the points evaluation at 86.5 kilometers and a bonus sprint after 160.5 kilometers.
The day's winner in the mass sprint was Dylan Groenewegen ( Team Lotto NL-Jumbo ) after a final attack by Philippe Gilbert was neutralized on the final kilometer. André Greipel and Fernando Gaviria crossed the finish line as second and third, but were distanced by the jury after touching the left side of the road to the last places in the peloton, so that the following drivers Peter Sagan were classified as second and John Degenkolb as third.
After 23 kilometers, a three-man top group formed with Laurens ten Dam , Fabien Grellier and Marco Minnaard . After Minnaard won the first mountain classification, ten Dam dropped back into the main field. Grellier won the second mountain classification and the intermediate sprint. The two outliers had a maximum advantage of 6:20 minutes. Greiller was stopped six kilometers from the finish; shortly before that, Minnaard was falling behind. Grellier received the red number on his back .
After Greg Van Avermaet finished third in the bonus sprint and thus extended his lead in the overall standings by a second, Daniel Martin and Julian Alaphilippe lost contact after a mass crash and came 1:16 minutes behind the finish line 15 kilometers from the finish. Tony Martin was also involved in this fall , who broke a vortex and did not start on the ninth stage .
